Kevin McFadden calls it a perfect fit.
Sam Mustipher, McFadden’s pupil at Olney (Md.) Good Counsel, committed to Notre Dame on Monday.
“It’s a perfect fit for him,” said McFadden, an assistant coach at the school. “He’s going to do very well there.”
McFadden called Mustipher the exact type of athlete Notre Dame is looking for. The Under Armour All-American and ESPN Watch List offensive guard has a GPA exceeding 4.0, and athletically he held offers from more than a dozen elite programs.
“Sam is a different guy, smart kid and intuitive,” McFadden said. “He really, really did a put in a lot of work into the research. He’s a Notre Dame-type kid. When he leaves here, he’s going to another good college. It’s another tier -- the academic component, the structure, it’s Catholic.”
Shortly after Mustipher’s commitment, fellow offensive line commit Jimmy Byrne took to Twitter to congratulate his future teammate. That type of relationship with the fellow recruits and players already up at South Bend made a major impact on Mustipher.
“He loves the guys up there, loves the camaraderie amongst Notre Dame nation,” McFadden said.
McFadden got the feel a decision would be coming very soon after Mustipher took a visit to Notre Dame and several other Midwest schools a month ago. From that point on, McFadden felt the 6-foot-4, 280-pound lineman was leaning Notre Dame’s way.
Michigan and Stanford were the other serious contenders for Mustipher, McFadden said.
“He loves the legacy, and the academic component, he loves that,” McFadden said. “The coaching staff, the upbeat tempo in practices, that is well-scripted for him because he’s a structure guy. He liked everything he saw.”
The sixth commitment -- and sixth Watch List pledge -- in Notre Dame’s 2014 class, Mustipher helps Notre Dame soften the blow after missing on tackle Kc McDermott, who committed to Miami (Fla.) over Notre Dame earlier this month.
