In-state receiver Brent commits to Irish

For 2014 receiver Justin Brent (Speedway, Ind./Speedway), he knew he was ready to commit to Notre Dame while on a visit. Except that visit Brent was actually to Ohio State.

The 6-foot-1, 187-pound receiver went to Notre Dame’s camp on June 22 and followed it with a visit to Ohio State the following afternoon. Having seen and compared Notre Dame with another program – and the program of the coach, Urban Meyer, he grew up idolizing – Brent realized Notre Dame was the right place for him.

So he called Fighting Irish assistant coach Chuck Martin right after the Ohio State camp and gave him the good news. The Irish staff just wanted to see Brent’s transcripts and host him and his mother for one more visit before offering and accepting the commitment.

“On the 22nd I did well and they liked me and wanted to bring me back in,” Brent said. “The next day I went to Ohio State and I’m a huge Urban Meyer fan, a big Florida Gators fan. It just felt right at Notre Dame, felt comfortable.”

Brent visited Notre Dame a couple of times before making his most recent trip this past Friday, but it was the first time his mother had a chance to see the campus. Brent said she was sold almost immediately.

“Once my mom heard they have a 100 percent student-athlete graduation rate she was all for it,” Brent said laughing.

The Irish were Brent’s first and only offer, but he said neither his mom nor his coach felt he needed to wait any longer if Notre Dame is the right place for him.

“My coach, my mom knew when it came down to it, that it is my decision,” Brent said. “They knew wherever I was happy they’d be on board with it. A lot of people say a lot more offers will come and it’s weird saying that and maybe it’s true. Some people wanted me to hold out but the end of the day I’m going to be the one to live with the decision.
