What’s in a name? A ton if you’re Eric Modie (North Royalton, Ohio/North Royalton).
Modie grew up a big Florida State fan and even bigger Bobby Bowden enthusiast.
So when Akron coach Terry Bowden -- Bobby’s son -- started showing interest, Modie found it hard to contain his excitement.
While the Zips join Albany, St. Francis (Pa.), Penn and Robert Morris in the sweepstakes for Modie, right now it’s just interest.
But it’s interest Modie hopes turns into an offer.
“I definitely love Akron,” Modie said. “There’s a new coach, who is the son of a legend.
“They have one of the top facilities in the nation. That would be a dream come true. Growing up, I was really a Florida State fan, so I liked his dad a lot.”
Akron will get to see Modie up close as the 6-foot-5, 265-pound offensive guard plans on taking unofficial visits to Akron on Sept. 29 for the game against Miami (Ohio) and then again on Oct. 6 for the Bowling Green contest.
Modie still has his eyes on the prize and hopes more interest comes down the line.
“It’s something to keep working towards,” he said. “I just keep my head down and keep up with my high school play and just keep going. I’d bring raw talent. They could mold me into a right or left tackle.”
