Gelen Robinson spends day at Notre Dame

Gelen Robinson (St. John, Ind./Lake Central) was taking in his first Notre Dame game, so he wanted to make sure he did not miss anything.

The 6-foot-2, 225-pound inside linebacker was at Notre Dame seven hours before the primetime kickoff.

“They showed us around the athletic building, got to see their film room and locker room,” Robinson said. “They were showing us the Heisman trophies and the team trophies and the NFL players to have come from there.”

Robinson talked with assistant coach Mike Elston, who told him to make sure he remains in contact with the Fighting Irish staff.

The game was when Robinson became really impressed with the Fighting Irish.

“What impressed me the most was how everyone got excited for the game. Being on campus for game day was exciting,” he said. “It was a great feeling they had there.”

A linebacker, Robinson really liked what he saw from Manti Te’o and the rest of the Irish’s linebackers.

“They did great,” he said. “Their defense runs what my high school runs, and they did a good job executing, especially their linebackers.”

Robinson does not have any offers, but several Big Ten teams are interested. He will visit Illinois for the Penn State game this coming weekend and could make it to Michigan soon. The Michigan trip would be for a game but not as a recruit, as he has a family friend with Michigan tickets.

Through six games, Robinson said he has nine sacks, more than 50 tackles and 20 tackles for loss and three forced fumbles, one resulting in a touchdown.
