Purdue first to offer LB Davonte James

ESPN Watch List inside linebacker Davonte James (Springfield, Ohio/Springfield) has his first offer.

Purdue became the first program to extend the 6-foot-2, 220-pound junior after talking with recruiting coach Kevin Maurice.

"He was telling me a couple things about Purdue and what they're like, how the past couple years they've sent 20 people to the NFL from their team and how they have a great history of linebackers and defensive players and how they're excited about me," James said of his conversation with Maurice.

Watching from afar, James is already impressed with the program.

"I think they're a great team and play really well and have a great defense," James said.

James finished his junior season with 105 tackles, an interception (which he returned for a score), a fumble recovery and a sack. Those numbers have other programs such as Michigan, Pittsburgh and West Virginia impressed as well.

For James, he is just glad to get offer No. 1 out of the way.

"It means a lot actually," he said, "and I think I have a couple more coming."
