Smierciak drawn to Miami-OH's academics

Senior linebacker/tight end Zach Smierciak (Aurora, Ohio) committed Tuesday to sign with the RedHawks, according to the Plain-Dealer.

"I'm going to major in business and getting a degree from (Miami's) business program is going to be huge for me in the future,'' he said. "I liked the direction Miami is going with its football, I wanted to go to a program where I feel I can help out right away and Miami's the place for me."

Ball State, Buffalo, Kent State and Yale also extended scholarship offers to Smierciak. The 6-foot-2, 216-pound prospect received interest from BCS programs such as Boston College, Minnesota, Northwestern and Penn State.

He shined on the Nike combine circuit this spring posting an electronically timed 4.74 40-yard dash, 4.4 20-yard shuttle, 31.4-inch vertical and 96.21 SPARQ.

Miami-OH has seven commitments.
