Jameis Winston's coach talks recruiting

There was a big uproar on Friday and Saturday, as word got out that the nation’s top quarterback prospect, Jameis Winston (Hueytown, Ala./Hueytown), was going to officially visit LSU over the weekend.

Winston made the trip to Baton Rouge on Saturday and got home late on Sunday night, according to Hueytown coach Matt Scott.

“Jameis went straight to the weight room on Monday morning and right to practice Monday afternoon,” Scott said. “To be honest, I haven’t had time to really sit down and talk with him about the visit. I know he texted me over the weekend, and I know he enjoyed the visit. He met with coach (Les) Miles and had a good meeting.”

Winston committed to Florida State in August. He recently attended a game at Alabama when they hosted Vanderbilt. How serious is he about the Crimson Tide and Tigers?

“Honestly, he has never been to a game at LSU, and he wanted to check it out and see what it was like,” Scott said. “And what you have to remember that he’s been to Alabama a million times and he’s been to so many games there. People are reading way too much into all of this.”

So where does Winston stand with the Seminoles?

“He’s committed to Florida State,” Scott said. “He will make his official visit there when they play Miami (Nov. 11). I would be surprised if he took an official visit to any other schools. He may to Alabama but again, he has been there so many times.”

With signing day quickly approaching has Scott seen the recruiting efforts pick up with LSU, Alabama and others regarding his star quarterback?

“I have been talking with those guys (coaches) lately and nothing has really changed,” Scott said. “What people have to understand is that these coaches have been recruiting him for three years now and they know Jameis. He’s a kid that you don’t want to squeeze or put too much pressure on. That won’t work.”

Winston is the No. 11 recruit overall and a four-star prospect. He’s had a super senior season. This past weekend he was 9 of 10 for 220 yards and two scores in a win over Birmingham (Ala.) Woodlawn. For the season he is 110 of 155 for 1,652 yards and 21 touchdown passes.
