Marcell Ateman (Wylie, Texas/East) has seen the offers roll in this spring as Michigan, Tennessee and Oklahoma State are just a few of the schools in hot pursuit of the 6-foot-4, 190-pound receiver prospect.
Though Oklahoma has not offered Ateman, he still plans to visit Norman, Okla., soon.
“I’ll probably get up there in the summer or in the spring to see one of their spring practices,” Ateman said. “They told me whenever I want to come up there, it’s cool to come up there.”
Offensive coordinator Josh Heupel has been handling the recruitment of Ateman -- as well as his teammate, recent Baylor commit Quan Jones --for the Sooners.
“He’s a cool, laid back guy,” Ateman said of Heupel. “He can talk to you about anything. He can teach you well and when it’s time to work, he’s serious.”
Ateman was one of the most impressive receivers at the NIKE Football Training Camp event in Dallas on March 25. Several cornerbacks at the camp singled out the Wylie receiver as one of the tougher guys to cover last weekend.
“Overall, I did all right,” Ateman said. “In the one-on-ones, there’s not great timing with the quarterbacks but I caught some passes.”
He brings good size and athleticism to the receiver position and could fit the mold of a big outside receiver, similar to DeJuan Miller, in OU’s offense.
