Cannon Smith follows in dad's footsteps

Class of 2014 tight end Cannon Smith (Columbia, S.C./Hammon) has made an early pledge to Clemson, the Spartanburg Herald Journal reports. His father, Bill Smith, played defensive line for the Tigers and currently serves on the board of trustees.

"It was a great feeling to be a part of the tradition," Cannon said. "I like the brotherhood feeling the players have towards each other and I wanted to be a part of that. It's a nice fit for me and I love it."

While Clemson was first to offer, other programs including Appalachian State, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Towson showed interest.

Smith, a 6-foot-5, 235-pound prospect, caught 20 passes for 394 yards and four touchdowns as a sophomore.

Clemson's off to a fast start on its 2014 class already holding five commitments.
