Rutgers impressing WR Tyrone Washington

Rutgers extended an offer to Tyrone Washington (Paramus, N.J./Paramus Catholic) toward the end of his sophomore year. He will have a litany of offers by the time he graduates in 2014.

The 6-foot-2, 180-pound receiver, who also has a UMass offer, already likes what he seems from Rutgers and what first-year coach Kyle Flood is doing in Piscataway.

“Rutgers has me really impressed this year,” Washington said. “To be No. 15 in the country [in the BCS rankings], I didn’t expect it at all.”

Washington said Boston College, Colorado, Georgia Tech, Michigan and Pittsburgh are also interested in him.

Although he starts at both cornerback and receiver, Washington’s future is on offense. He spent the offseason working with quarterback Steve Shanley to perfect his routes.

“Last year my routes weren’t exactly where I needed to be,” he said. “Now if I got to be at 14 yards I’m running at 14; if I got to be at 12 I’m at 12.”

A taller receiver at 6-foot-2 with still more time to grow, Washington said he is also adept at getting the ball at its highest point and making the tough catches with traffic around him.

Washington is also a track and field star, competing in the high jump, long jump and triple jump. He might run the 4 x 400 relay and the 400 this year because, as he said, “I like winning.”
