Four-star DL Gaius Vaenuku takes in Utah

Four-star defensive lineman Gaius Vaenuku (Euless, Texas/Trinity) took an unofficial visit to Utah over the weekend and left the Pac-12 school with a new level of respect.

Vaenuku, who was on his second unofficial in as many weeks, said he enjoyed the Rice-Eccles Stadium atmosphere as Utah downed Washington State 49-6. He was one of 45,069 in attendance.

“The atmosphere, to me, kind of reminded me of Trinity,” Vaenuku, a 6-foot-6, 270-pound athlete who can play both defensive end and defensive tackle. “There are a lot of Polynesians there.”

Vaenuku said he had a chance to visit with several of the Utah coaches, including his primary recruiting contact, safeties coach Morgan Scalley. He also noticed how loud the stadium can get and witnessed the frenzy of a successful Utah afternoon.

“It was pretty live the whole time,” he said. “It was also pretty hot, too.”

Vaenuku visited Oklahoma for the Sooners-Notre Dame clash last week. He said he hopes to visit TCU this weekend as the Horned Frogs host Kansas State. Vaenuku has offers from Utah as well as Oklahoma, Notre Dame, TCU, UCLA, Washington, Michigan, Oklahoma State and a host of other programs.

Vaenuku added that he won’t announce any official visits or make a decision until after the high school season. Trinity is a week away from preparing for the Texas Class 5A playoffs.
