PINSON, Ala. -- Senior linebacker Zach Cunningham (Pinson, Ala./Pinson Valley) is finally starting to receive some recognition. Since last week, he has picked up more than five scholarship offers, including offers from BCS programs Duke and Tennessee.
The 6-foot-4, 195-pound linebacker has been one his team’s best players for the last two years, but college coaches are just starting to take note.
“It was midseason when it really started picking up,” Cunningham said. “All of the college coaches started noticing me when I sent them a highlight film.”
On Friday night, he had another big night with 12 tackles -- four for a loss -- and three sacks. He also scored two late rushing touchdowns to help seal a 40-21 victory over Briarwood Christian.
“I tell everybody I call, he’s the best football player on the field every Friday night,” Pinson Valley coach Matt Glover said.
In addition to the recent offers, Cunningham has also heard from Alabama, Auburn, Clemson and Vanderbilt in the last two weeks. He’s already visited both Tennessee and Vanderbilt this season, and he plans to go to one of the two in-state schools for a game on Saturday.
