Alex Bars just seems like a southern prospect destined to play football in the north.
The ESPN Watch List offensive lineman has one brother that is a freshman offensive lineman at Michigan and another that is a junior defensive end at Penn State. Still, there's an SEC team making a push for the standout from Nashville (Tenn.) Montgomery Bell, as Georgia has made quite an early impression for the 2014 prospect.
"Overall it was a great visit," the 6-foot-6, 280-pound junior told ESPN via text message after his visit to Athens last weekend.
In fact, several SEC and Southern schools like what they see in Bars. He has scholarship offers from Duke, Kentucky, Mississippi State, North Carolina, Ole Miss, Tennessee and Vanderbilt. From the north, he has scholarship offers from Indiana, Michigan and Ohio State.
Can Georgia compete with the schools about the Mason-Dixon line? It appears so.
"Liked everything I saw," Bars said. "Liked how the coaches respected the players."
Bars said one of the highlights of the trip was seeing head coach Mark Richt's pre-game speech on Saturday. Richt would certainly be every bit as convincing if he offered Bars the scholarship he is hoping for.
