Iowa State added its 21st commitment on Wednesday, as versatile defensive back Jalen Barnes (Port Arthur, Texas/Memorial) gave the Cyclones his verbal pledge.
Barnes, a 6-foot-1, 185-pound safety for Port Arthur, chose Iowa State over offers from Mississippi State, Utah, Kansas, San Jose State, North Texas, Tulsa and Louisiana-Lafayette. Oklahoma State also was in the mix.
Recruited by running backs coach Kenith Pope, Barnes, who has 4.52-second speed in the 40-yard dash, could line up at either safety or cornerback for safety in college.
“It’s great knowing I have somewhere to go now,” Barnes said. “I liked the fact that they offered early playing time. I like the program overall. They’re in the Big 12, so the competition is always going to be really good.”
Barnes had Iowa State, Tulsa and Utah in his top three in September.
