Juco RB Charles Davis adds Toledo offer

Charles Davis (Avon, Ind./Iowa Western CC) was disappointed when he learned he was not going to be able to play Division I football coming out of high school because of his grades. The news got worse when he had to redshirt for his freshman year at Iowa Western.

But the 5-foot-8, 180-pound 2014 running back received good news Friday when Toledo offered him a scholarship, his first since enrolling at a junior college.

“Coach [D.K.] McDonald, he was liking my film and he’s going to be up in the spring to see me,” Davis said. “He liked what I did out of high school.”

Davis said much of the staff wanted to offer Davis coming out of high school, but former coach Tim Beckman never gave the OK. First-year coach Matt Campbell believes Davis can be a difference maker at Toledo.

“They like my feet, my ability to run between the tackles even though I’m small,” he said. “I can do good in their spread offense.”

Davis also heard from Maryland coach Randy Edsall late last week, and Edsall told Davis to give him a call. Davis got Edsall’s voicemail, but he’s hoping the Maryland coach has similar news.

“Maryland is real interested,” Davis said.

Akron and Arkansas are also interested in Davis.
