Gophers land three-star RB Edwards

High three-star running back Berkley Edwards (Chelsea, Mich./Chelsea) committed Thursday to play in the Big Ten for Minnesota, according to multiple reports.

California was the only over BCS conference program to offer the 5-foot-9, 190-pound senior. He made an official visit to Iowa for the weekend of Oct. 19 but did not receive an offer from the Hawkeyes.

Edwards fielded most of his attention from Mid-American Conference schools such as Ball State, Bowling Green, Buffalo, Central Michigan, Eastern Michigan, Kent State, Northern Illinois, Toledo and Western Michigan, all of which extended scholarship offers.

ESPN wrote in his evaluation, "Edwards is a prospect who may be slipping through the BCS cracks at this time. Comes across as a multi-purpose back with his size, speed and receiving skills but the more you watch this young man the more you see every-down qualities, particularly if he can continue to develop physically."

"Not dominate in one area when projecting as a full-time BCS level back but feel Edwards could still produce as a three-down runner and at worst case develop into a valuable all-purpose back with his hands and polished receiving skills out of the backfield."

Edwards posted BCS-caliber combine measurables before his junior year, when he registered a 4.68 40-yard dash, 4.18 20-yard shuttle and 35.9-inch vertical.

The Gophers have 10 pledges for 2013, including nine three-star prospects and one junior college transfer.
