The North Carolina State Wolfpack has three defensive players on the North Carolina team at the Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas, and they are in waiting mode watching as new head coach Dave Doeren builds his defensive staff.
"I talked to the new head coach, Coach Doeren, and he reminds me of my current head coach," said cornerback Jack Tocho (Charlotte, N.C./Independence). "I think they are going to run the 4-3, but I don't really know much about the defense other than that."
Tocho planned to take his official visit to Raleigh two weeks ago, but had to cancel due to the firing of former head coach Tom O'Brien.
Since that time, Tocho has talked with some of the fellow commitments and said that most are also waiting.
"One of the guys tweeted that we should all stick around, but most of them are staying quiet because they don't want to say the wrong thing," Tocho said.
Linebacker Quinton Patterson (Shelby, N.C./Crest) admitted that he is even further in the dark as the last conversation he had with an NC State coach was two weeks ago when linebackers coach Jon Tenuta called for an update.
"He didn't say much because he didn't know if he was going to stay," said Patterson.
When Patterson hears from the new staff, he admitted that all he hopes to hear the new coaches say is, "that we are on our way up, because winning is all that matters."
