Vanderbilt was late getting into the game for three-star offensive tackle Sean Dowling (Fallbrook, Calif./Union), but the Commodores made up for it.
Dowling committed to Vandy on Saturday afternoon. Originally a UCLA commit, Dowling and the Bruins parted ways last week.
He didn’t have much of a chance to look in other directions because he wants to enroll early. And the combination of a being a program on the rise and a school with a great academic history was enough to sway Dowling to the Commodores.
“I know I’m going to get the best college education you can possibly get,” Dowling said. “It’s a chance to compete in the SEC, and we’re going to win championships before it’s all over.”
Dowling chose Vandy over Oklahoma and said he still intends to enroll early. Dowling made an official visit to OU in October but said the Commodores' coaching staff made a huge impression on him.
Dowling committed to UCLA in April, and Vanderbilt didn’t start to show serious interest until midway through the season. But on a visit to the school in the fall, Dowling said he was in awe of how great the campus is.
Dowling, who is 6-foot-6 and 260 pounds, is Vandy’s 23rd pledge for the 2013 class and first offensive tackle.
