Auburn has taken some lumps with its 2013 recruiting class since Gus Malzahn has taken over as head coach. But it received a huge boost because of Malzahn on Christmas.
Three-star offensive guard Devonte Danzey (Hutchinson, Kan./Hutchinson CC) confirmed he has signed with Auburn on Tuesday. Danzey is 6-foot-3 and 303 pounds.
The Tigers weren’t even close to being on Danzey’s radar until Malzahn came into the picture. But after he took over at Auburn, Malzahn made Danzey one of his top targets to pursue.
“Coach Malzahn had a great relationship with our coaches and with our players when he was at Arkansas State,” Hutchinson coach Rion Rhoades said. “Everything he has said he would do, he has done. I know Devonte had no interest at all in Auburn until Malzahn became the guy.”
Danzey’s recruitment heated up in a hurry. He took official visits to Texas Tech, Baylor and Auburn in a span of a week. He was really impressed with the Bears, but the feeling was just something different at Auburn.
There were rumors Danzey was going to sign last week, but he said following his Auburn visit he was going to wait until Christmas. He lived up to his word.
Danzey is the 12th commit of Auburn’s class and the first offensive lineman to pledge to Malzahn’s Tigers. Kansas and West Virginia were also among Danzey’s finalists.
