Class of 2014 tight end Denzel Tolliver (Hillside, Ill./Proviso West) set the single-game receiving record at his high school this season, and he has caught the attention of college coaches.
“I broke the school record with 11 catches for 126 yards,” Tolliver said, “and I was a threat in the red zone.”
Minnesota assistant coach Jeff Phelps stopped by Proviso West in December to find out more about Tolliver. Phelps said he saw Tolliver’s film and was impressed, and he plans to stay in touch with Tolliver in the next year.
Northern Illinois saw the potential in Tolliver before the season as the Huskies offered a scholarship to Tolliver last summer following a camp.
“It was a very proud moment. My mom and dad were proud of me, and they said I have to keep working hard if I want to keep it,” Tolliver said.
Although NIU is his first and only offer at this point, Tolliver said that has nothing to do with why he is already a big fan of the Huskies.
“I really like them. I like them academic-wise and sports-wise,” he said. “Academically they make sure everyone has a tutor, and [athletically] they really work hard to accomplish what they did this year.”
