Three-star LB D.J. Moffitt (Concord, Calif./De La Salle), the No. 43-rated outside linebacker for 2013, pledged Friday to sign with the Rebels, multiple sources report.
Arizona, Colorado, Colorado State, Houston, Utah, Washington State also offered the 6-foot-2, 205-pound prospect, while schools such as California and Oregon showed interest. Moffitt told the Las Vegas Sun that some programs wanted him to commit before he was ready.
"There was some interest with those schools, but it didn't work out with them because of some communication issues," he said. "I think they wanted me to commit a little earlier. Where I'm going, I'm happy with it ... I knew UNLV was my No. 1."
ESPN considers Moffitt to be UNLV's highest rated commitment for 2013 and a steal for the Mountain West Conference program: "Moffitt displays the instincts and nose for the football which allows him to make big plays when defending both the run and pass ... The intensity and determination to chase down the ball along with his big play ability are what we look for when evaluating linebackers. Moffitt has the athletic skills and toughness needed to earn early situational playing time at the BCS level of competition."
The Rebels now have 18 players committed or already signed for 2013.
