Gnonkonde commits to North Carolina

It didn’t take Junior Gnonkonde (Lakeland, Ga./Lanier County) long to find his new home. This 2012 three-star defensive end is now headed to the University of North Carolina after visiting Chapel Hill this weekend.

“Yes, I committed," Gnonkonde said. “It was just a great visit and I felt comfortable enough to go ahead and make a decision. I liked everything and everyone was so nice. They made me feel so at home.”

Gnonkonde was Georgia Tech’s first commitment for this Yellow Jacket class. Then he was dropped last weekend because Georgia Tech said he failed to have the necessary test score. The Yellow Jackets' loss is the Tar Heels' gain.

“I really like the coaching staff,” Gnonkonde said. “I am done and will sign with them on Wednesday.”

Some teams like Syracuse and Florida were perhaps hoping that Gnonkonde would extend his recruitment so they would have a chance to get him on their respective campuses.

Gnonkonde, 6-foot-5 and 225-pounds, is North Carolina’s 21st commitment. He’s the No. 120 ranked defensive end and the No. 96 rated recruit from the state of Georgia.
