When Florida and Georgia square off on Saturday afternoon, the game will feature two teams who have had numerous recruiting battles over the years. The two programs battle for players in both states and the last four or five years have been no different. This year is no different. There are multiple recruiting battles taking place between the two schools. Here’s a closer look at some of the players who will likely make an impact in the game on Saturday and how their recruitment played out, as well as some of the battles taking place this year.
Current players in the Florida/Georgia game
QB Jacob Eason (Georgia): The long-time Georgia commit decided to visit Florida late in the recruiting process after Mark Richt was fired. While the Gators certainly made things interesting, Eason signed with the Bulldogs and has started for the majority of his freshmen season.
OT Jawaan Taylor (Florida): This three-star offensive linemen committed to Florida after earning a Gators offer at their summer camp. Taylor flew somewhat under the radar until Georgia offered Taylor late in the process. While the lineman was intrigued with Georgia he ultimately signed with the Gators and has arguably been Florida’s best offensive lineman as a true freshman.
DE Lorenzo Carter (Georgia): The former five-star prospect had Florida as his leader for a majority of his senior season, but ultimately the home-state Bulldogs beat out the Gators and Alabama to land Carter. The junior prospect leads the team with four sacks.
DE Antonneous Clayton (Florida): While Georgia wasn’t the top contender to Florida for Clayton, the Bulldogs were always in the hunt for the Vienna, Georgia, native. Florida eventually beat out the Bulldogs as well as Auburn and FSU for Clayton and he has gone on to play significant downs in the last two games for the Gators.
WR Reggie Davis (Georgia): The Tallahassee (Florida) Lincoln High School product almost committed to Florida prior to the start of his senior season but Florida told Davis to hold off on his commitment. He eventually picked Georgia and has gone on to have a steady career as a receiver and special teams player.
Recruiting battles to watch
DE Malik Herring: This ESPN 300 prospect has visits planned to Alabama, Clemson, Georgia and USC. Florida is battling with LSU and Tennessee to gain Herring’s last official visit. There is still a long way to go but Georgia seems to be in a good position for the four-star prospect.
OT Alex Leatherwood: The five-star offensive tackle has been committed to Alabama for over a year but is still taking visits. Leatherwood already visited Georgia and Michigan and is still planning on taking other visits including one to Florida. At this point, Florida seems like the most likely school to flip Leatherwood.
DE Markaviest Bryant: Both Florida and Georgia are going hard after this talented defensive end prospect. Other schools Bryant is considering include Florida State, Clemson, Alabama and Auburn. Still a long way to go for Bryant but Georgia seems to have a slight edge right now.
ATH Chis Henderson: This one-time Miami commit appeared destined to flip to Florida, but Henderson decided to take more official visits including one to Georgia before making a decision. Miami and Tennessee are also in the picture, but the Gators appear to still be in good shape.
ATH Tray Bishop: Despite being committed to Auburn, both Georgia and Florida continue to pursue the talented athlete who could play a few different positions. Look for Bishop to visit both programs before completely shutting down his recruitment.
