2014 ATH Clark surprised by USC offer

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -- When Ronnie Clark (Calera, Ala./Calera) found out he had received a scholarship offer from USC this week, he asked his coach, "USC who?"

"The Trojans," his coach said. Even Clark, who already has offers from Alabama and Auburn, was surprised that a school as far away as USC knew of him.

“That’s cool because that’s one of the top recruiting teams in the country,” Clark said. “To get an offer from USC, way out there in California, that’s neat. I wouldn’t think that they would even look at me, but knowing they offered me, I was shocked.

“That’s one of my bigger offers with how far out it is and how their team is. They normally have the top recruits come there because you know, it’s California. Who wouldn’t want to stay in California?”

USC wasn’t the only major school to offer Clark this month. The ESPN Watch List athlete picked up another SEC offer recently when Tennessee extended a scholarship his way. It was his fourth SEC offer.

“It was great, just adding on to my list,” Clark said. “It’s another SEC school. That’s always good to have all of the SEC schools offer you because that’s the toughest conference right now. Having your pick of which one to go to, that’s pretty neat.

“Coach [Derrick] Ansley, the defensive back coach, he came to the school, talked with me and tried to get to know me a little bit. He’s a cool guy. I’m glad that they offered me.”

Clark might have a few more SEC schools to choose from soon, as he believes LSU and Missouri may be the next two schools to offer a scholarship. He says he’s also been receiving a lot of mail from Florida State.

He's planning to take a break from the recruiting process this weekend and stay at home, but the Alabama native wants to visit Tuscaloosa in two weeks when the Crimson Tide host Texas A&M. He’s also expected to attend the Iron Bowl at UA.

Clark may have been close to a decision over the summer, but with all of the recent interest, he now wants to take his time with a decision.

“I’m not in a hurry,” he said. “I’m not in a rush because I’ve still got another year. I’m still kind of looking over everything. There’s a lot of stuff that I have to think about, so I’m not in any hurry to make a decision anytime soon."
