Three-star defensive back Hassan Childs (Kissimmee, Fla./Osceola) is no longer a verbal commitment to N.C. State following the school’s dismissal of head coach Tom O’Brien and apparent changes on the staff.
The 6-foot-1, 173-pound senior said defensive backs coach Mike Reed told him he was likely leaving the program.
“I had a good relationship with the defensive backs coach and he’s going to be leaving, so I need to open things up,” Childs said. “I’m in the middle of a playoff run, so things might be put on hold for a couple weeks.”
Osceola is in the Class 7A quarterfinals and will face Lithia (Fla.) Newsome on Friday.
The defensive back holds offers from Indiana, Utah State, Florida International and Purdue. Childs said Vanderbilt reached out to him recently and South Florida and Penn State have also shown heavy interest.
Childs has had a standout season on defense and is among the state leaders in interceptions with seven.
