Three-star prospect Troy McCollum (Miami/North Miami) had already planned to take some visits before deciding on whether to stick with his commitment to Florida International.
However the 6-foot, 165-pound senior seems pretty open after the firing of head coach Mario Cristobal.
“That was real surprising because coach Cristobal had done a real good job,” McCollum said. “He won the conference, took them to bowl games -- he’s a Miami guy.
“When I heard, I thought somebody was playing a joke on me. I don’t know what to say.”
McCollum said the news of Cristobal’s departure has made the decision to check out other programs even easier. The defensive back is looking into Indiana, Utah State, Hawaii and Bowling Green, among others.
“Well, Indiana is a real good situation because they want me and they are in the Big Ten,” McCollum added. “It’s a good academic school and that’s an important thing.
“Hawaii is coming to visit me next week. Coach [Chris] Demarest has been recruiting me there.”
McCollum isn’t sure what’s going to happen next and there’s a good chance he’ll wait until national signing day to decide once and for all.
“I’m just going to see everything I can,” McCollum said. “I’m going to see some schools and talk things over with my mom.”
