It was a disappointing Saturday night for Booker T. Washington (Miami, Fla.) junior offensive lineman Denver Kirkland.
After dominating the Class 4A championship game for three quarters, Booker T. Washington struggled in the fourth and gave up 21 points in a stunning 33-25 loss.
“I feel at some points we played good but we didn’t do enough, and we left them with too many opportunities,” Kirkland said. “We’ll try again next year when I’m a senior. I thought we had (it) and everyone might have let up a little.”
Kirkland’s recruitment is a brighter story as several schools are looking at the 6-foot-3, 300-pound junior.
He has offers from Rutgers, South Florida, Miami and Louisville. He’s also actively talking with Oregon, Georgia, Notre Dame, Florida and Cincinnati.
Alabama is also on his radar and some of the Tide’s coaching staff even visiting Kirkland last week.
“The coaches are trying to get me to come to their camp over the summer,” Kirkland said. “I’d definitely like to check it out.”
Kirkland has already been to Friday Night Lights at Florida and plans to go again.
“It was a great experience and a lot of good competition,” Kirkland said. “It was a good chance to showcase my abilities, and I’m going to try to go back.”
While he has no early favorites Kirkland does have two schools that stand out.
“I’ve been a fan of Miami and I kind of like South Florida, too,” Kirkland added.
