Ashton Shumpert committed to Mississippi State on Monday, and didn't hold a news conference the way many top prospects announce their choices. The ESPN 300 athlete just informed the Bulldogs coaches.
"He's kind of handled it the way he's handled everything else, quietly," said his high school coach, Toby Collums. "Once he decided that Mississippi State was the place for him, he just did it a nonchalant way. He didn't bring a lot of attention to it."
Shumpert was also considering Ole Miss, Georgia and Vanderbilt. He is rated the No. 243 prospect in the nation and the No. 5 prospect in Mississippi.
It's unclear which position Shumpert will play in college. Running back, safety and linebacker are all possibilities for the 6-foot-2, 210-pound Shumpert, who said he has no preference.
Shumpert is Mississippi State's seventh four-star commitment and its third prospect from the ESPN 300. The Bulldogs have 21 commitments for the 2013 class.
