Midweek Florida mailbag

Instead of adding a mailbag to my Friday notebook, it will be a mid-week feature now on the blog.

Lots of questions in the inbox, so let’s get started:

Hey Corey, in percentages what’s the chance of Florida landing the following players: Nelson Agholor, Kent Taylor, Tracy Howard and Avery Young?

Mike Terrell, Gainesville, Fla.

Hello Mike. I would say the chances are as follows: Agholor 55 percent, Taylor 75 percent, Howard 10 percent and Young 25 percent.

Corey, you keep saying that Dante Fowler Jr. (St. Petersburg, Fla./Lakewood) is a soft commitment to FSU and might switch to Florida. You know that isn’t true because he and his dad have stated over and over that he’s solid but what makes you say it?

Yancey Jackson, Pensacola, Fla.

I understand what Dante and his father are saying Yancey. I also understand that they are spending more time in Gainesville than the average FSU commit tends to do. Now there are two sides to this. Dante’s younger brother, Donterio, likes Florida a lot so Dante could be visiting there more than normal to help his brother get on the Gators’ radar. But Dante hasn’t done much to quiet any potential interest in Florida on his end. It’s expected that Fowler will return to FSU when it hosts Miami on Nov. 12, maybe that visit will solidify him.

Corey, how much will UCF joining the Big East help its recruiting?

Gary Donaldson, Oviedo, Fla.

Gary, UCF should really reap benefits in the 2013 class, which will have much more room than the 2012 class does. I think it opens up a lot of recruiting windows for UCF. Maybe the Knights won’t go head-to-head for the players gunning for FSU and Florida, but rather the players that are committing to major BCS programs out of state like North Carolina, Virginia Tech and Ole Miss. UCF will now be very competitive for those talented prospects.

Hey Corey, how are my USF Bulls doing with recruiting this season, can we survive what appears to be another bad run in the Big East?

Tony Sanders, Bradenton, Fla.

Hello Tony, USF is doing well so far. I think the Bulls' top three prospects -- Sean Price, Christopher Bivins and Tyler Cameron -- could all compete for immediate playing time. USF needs more big bodies on the defensive line and might have to go the juco route for that. The Bulls also need at least one receiver that can stretch the field and aren’t in competition for Agholor, a local prospect who would be the best offensive player the school has ever landed.

Corey, will Miami be able to hold onto Duke Johnson and Keith Brown?

Samuel Ericcson, Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

Hey Sam, I think Miami is still very strong with Johnson. There’s a good chance Lamar Miller, a redshirt sophomore, could leave after this season and Johnson would have an opportunity to start immediately. Brown, I believe, is having a lot of emotional feelings coming from different sides. He loved Clemson and named them his leader but after the shine wore off, Miami was still in his heart. He’s going to see Georgia and Florida State and maybe a few others so he’s going to have to do a lot of thinking.

Corey, with Mario Edwards Jr. on his way out and Leonard Williams liking the Gators, what’s FSU going to do at defensive end?

Terry McMullen, Tallahassee, Fla.

Well Terry don’t close the book on Edwards or Williams just yet but FSU does have a few options or they can just take Chris Casher and Fowler and wait for 2013. If they felt like they needed another defensive end don’t rule out the staff going after Miami commitment Jelani Hamilton. He might take an official visit there and he’s definitely looking around. Staying in-state FSU could take a flyer on Miami Norland prospect Teko Powell or Miami Northwestern prospect Eric Kinsey, both would be very interested if FSU offered. They have a few options.
