South Carolina picked up a verbal commitment over the weekend from a defensive standout from Goose Creek, S.C. in Gerald Turner. Turner picked the Gamecocks over Clemson, North Carolina, Georgia and Georgia Tech.
“They [South Carolina] actually offered him in the ninth grade,” Goose Creek coach Chuck Reedy said. “Steve Spurrier, Jr. has been with him the whole entire time. It’s not too far away from home and that was always big with Gerald. He wanted to stay within four hours or so of home. He is just very comfortable with South Carolina. Now he can concentrate on school and football this season.”
Turner, 6-foot-2 and 250 pounds, can play a variety of positions at the next level. He already plays defensive end, fullback and tight end for his high school team.
“They see him as an Eric Norwood-type of player,”Reedy said. “He can be that combo defensive end/outside linebacker. This is a big kid that runs better than 4.6. He’s strong (350 bench press) and can play in a lot of different places. And he has such great quickness. Gerald is just a very good athlete.”
This past season playing defensive end Turner recorded 57 tackles, 11 tackles for a loss, nine sacks, five blocked kicks and six forced fumbles.
South Carolina now has three 2013 commitments.
