Lakewood athletes waiting for spring

With Lakewood (St. Petersburg, Fla.) wide receiver Rodney Adams already committed to Florida, the focus has now shifted to his talented teammates Tracy Johnson and Marquez Valdes.

Johnson, a 6-foot, 175-pound junior plays quarterback and would like the opportunity to do so at the next level but he could be moved to defensive back or wide receiver.

"Tracy definitely feels like he's a quarterback and so do I," said Lakewood head coach Cory Moore. "But I think he's open to being recruited as an athlete in the right situation."

Johnson threw for over 2,000 yards and 22 touchdowns as a junior. And while most of the big plays last season went to Adams it's expected that Valdes will have a major role in the passing game in 2012.

"Marquez is going to have a big year and really turn some heads," said Moore. "He's a tall target and someone that's going to be hard to stop all over the field, especially in the red zone."

Valdez, a 6-2, 180-pound junior has offers from Toledo and UMass already but several BCS programs are looking at him.

"We're going to have a lot of coaches in his this spring and the players are going have the opportunity to perform in front of them," Moore said. "I expect both Tracy and Marquez will have plenty of options after the spring."
