DL DeMarcus Walker updates his status

ESPN 150 defensive lineman DeMarcus Walker (Jacksonville, Fla./Sandalwood) took advantage of everything he could while at The Opening.

The 6-foot-4, 276-pound senior took considerable reps at defensive end and defensive tackle during the event to test his versatility in the most competitive environment he's experienced to date.

"When you get a chance to play against the best competition you have to take advantage of it," Walker said. "I really enjoyed the opportunity to work and try to gauge where I am against the top competition."

The 2013 Under Armour All-American admitted that he was trying to sneak into several lines to get as many reps as possible.

"I had a few good battles in the one-on-ones because I was playing end and tackle," Walker said. "Ira [Denson] was pretty tough but that's expected from him."

Walker was scheduled to make a decision on his recruitment in April but he pushed it back to May and has since postponed it again. With training camp right around the corner, Walker admitted he hoped to be committed to a program by now but he wants to make his decision one time and one time only.

"I'll make a decision sometime in August," Walker said. "Whenever I've felt like I'm ready to make a choice, I'll hear from another coaching staff and they ask me to take a visit and everything changes.

"My dad told me to handle things like a business and don't get stuck on one program, so I've been open to reconsidering and revisiting my top programs to make sure."

Walker has dwindled his list down to four schools: Florida, Alabama, Florida State and Auburn. He has visited each program unofficially and explained why he liked those four.

  • Alabama: "A good program that has won a lot of games and a couple of national championships. They are putting players in the league."

  • Florida: "It's close to home and I feel like I can trust the coaches there. I always enjoy myself when I'm around there."
