LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. -- ESPN 150 running back Taquan Mizzell (Virginia Beach, Va./Bayside) is set to make his decision next month. The 5-foot-10, 184-pound tailback says three teams are still in the mix for his commitment.
"It is still down to Virginia, West Virginia and North Carolina, in that order," Mizell said. "I will make my decision Aug. 21."
The No. 85 prospect in the country, Mizell ran for 1,298 yards and 23 touchdowns as a junior. He broke down his final three.
Virginia: "It is a great school with a great coaching staff. The facilities there are awesome and I have a couple former teammates there."
West Virginia: "My relationship with their coaches is great too. The way that they want to use me, like Tavon Austin, is pretty cool."
North Carolina: "I took a visit to North Carolina a couple weeks ago and it was lovely. I got a chance to meet with the head coach and my position coach and everyone up there was amazing."
The Cavaliers have given the four-star running back the impression that he is important to their 2013 class.
"I think Virginia is recruiting me the hardest," Mizell said. "They made it really seem like I am their priority and the No. 1 player in this class that they want. Other schools did that somewhat, but not like UVA did."
Helping Virginia's cause is another four-star prospect, one that has already pledged to attend college in Charlottesville, Va.
"Corwin Cutler (Chesapeake, Va./Ocean Lakes) pushes me to come to Virginia too just for the simple fact that he says he would love to have me in the backfield," Mizzell said.
In the Champion Gridiron Kings Championship at Disney's ESPN Wide World of Sports, the Southeast team defeated Mizzell and his Midwest squad 47-19. The No. 85 prospect in the country was in awe of the group of athletes he went up against Sunday.
"This competition was great and even though we did not win we had a lot of fun," Mizzell said. "The Southeast team really impressed me with the talent they had at running back, wide receiver and defense."
