Class of 2013 University School (Davie, Fla.) defensive tackle Maquedius Bain committed to Florida State Wednesday afternoon according to head coach Roger Harriot.
The 6-5, 285-pounder was also receiving interest from Florida and Wake Forest. He becomes the third member of FSU's Class of 2013 joining Prattville (Ala.) offensive lineman Austin Golson and Plantation (Fla.) defensive back Sojourn Shelton.
"He committed just minutes ago,” said Harriot. “He's been up there a few times and he had a cousin on the team as well as a good relationship with coach [Eddie] Gran.
"He wanted to be a Seminole and he wanted to get this out of the way."
Bain is a first-year starter who played basketball up until this season. Harriot says he's an explosive athlete and plays both sports with a mentality like Charles Barkley.
“He's extremely explosive, he's like a cat, he's big and strong and fast,” Harriot said. “He's working on his technique and staying low but that's something all young linemen work on.
“He's doing well in all areas and he's definitely a top lineman in South Florida.”
Harriot said Bain has had some big games in recent weeks including one against Chaminade-Madonna two weeks ago.
“We had a lot of media for that game and it was a local TV game of the week so everyone got a chance to see what we've seen,” Harriot said. “He is a very talented, very modest kid.”
