Team Recruiting Capsule: Manatee stacked again

Program: Manatee (Bradenton, Fla.)

Head Coach: Joe Kinnan

2011 Record: 13-2 (won Class 7A state championship)

ESPN 300 Prospect: QB Cord Sandberg (No. 9 DT-QB, No. 232 overall)

Top Underclassmen: 2014 DL Demarcus Christmas (6-3, 285); 2014 OL Jake Stickler (6-5, 290); 2015 QB Josh Meyer (6-1, 195)

Spotlight prospect: Defensive lineman Derrick Calloway (6-1, 300) finds his biggest issue is dealing with the rumors that he's already committed. "I've had about 5-6 schools reach out to congratulate me for committing and ask if I'm still keeping things slightly open," Calloway said. "And I tell them, 'What are you talking about, I'm not committed.' " And Calloway says that while Texas Tech, Arkansas and USC are out in front for his services, he's still open and will likely take all five official visits.

Recruiting Update: Sandberg decided on Mississippi State in June and Bulldog fans must wait patiently to see if the talented 6-2, 200-pound dual-threat quarterback sticks with football or opts to play baseball professionally. Offensive standouts Anthony Lauro (5-9, 200) and Ja'Juan Pollock (5-7, 165) have speed to burn and will also find themselves signing with FBS schools this fall. Between Calloway, Christmas and three-star UCF commit Blake Keller (6-2, 220), it's not a stretch to say Manatee has the best defensive line in the state -- but one of the under-the-radar players on the unit, 5-11, 235-pound senior Marquis Dawsey, will likely find himself in an FBS program as an outside linebacker. Kinnan said that he could have between 8-10 players sign with FBS schools this year.
