After not playing as a sophomore, Elisha Shaw (Tucker, Ga./Tucker) is making his presence known on the football field this fall. The 6-foot-5, 290-pound lineman unofficially has six sacks and a fumble forced in three games so far, and his early highlights were recently sent out to colleges.
One school decided they had seen enough.
"On Thursday we had walkthroughs, and my coach Bruce Adrine, he played at UGA, he had me call coach [Mark] Richt," Shaw said. "Coach Richt said he wanted to tell me in person on campus, but after looking at my highlights, he said it was a no-brainer and that I had a scholarship to the University of Georgia. It felt good to get that offer. Now I got an offer from the top team in the ACC in Florida State and the top two in the SEC in Alabama and Georgia. "
The Bulldogs have made a solid impression on Shaw so far.
"Georgia is a good place," Shaw said. "They have a lot of good coaches and talent in Athens. My family was excited about me getting the offer, but they just want me to stay humble, keep my grades up and keep working hard in the weight room."
The Bulldogs are the third school to offer Shaw, with Alabama and Florida State being the other two. Another SEC program could be next.
"Florida came to my school and told my coaches they will probably offer when I visit for the game against LSU in two weeks," Shaw said.
At the moment, Shaw says Georgia and FSU trail Alabama, the first program to offer him. Two former Crimson Tide standouts are on the staff at Tucker in Terry Jones Jr. and Toderick Malone.
"It meant so much to get that first offer from Nick Saban," Shaw said. "To see hundreds of prospects vying for a chance to play there and be one of only three or four to get a scholarship, that was crazy."
The Bulldogs are a program that Shaw has heard plenty about in recent years. His defensive line coach, Bruce Adrine, played at Georgia and has known Shaw since he was much younger. Another top prospect has discussed Georgia with Shaw as well.
"I saw my friend Nick Glass (Atlanta/St. Pius X) blowing up last year, and me and him are like brothers, so that motivated me to get better," Shaw said. "I told him one day the same thing would happen with me, and that is what is happening now. Now Nick is recruiting me to join him at Georgia. He says they will treat me like family up there. We have said we would be teammates at the next level, but Nick has said for me to follow my heart."
Shaw was in Tuscaloosa earlier this year to watch Alabama take on Western Kentcky, and last weekend he took in the Georgia Tech game. Shaw plans to visit FSU this weekend, then to Georgia for the Tennessee game, then to Florida for the LSU game.
