FOLEY, Ala. -- Junior wide receiver DeMarcus Bingham (Foley, Ala./Foley) is still waiting on his first scholarship offer, but he might not have to wait long. Bingham believes Mississippi State might offer either this week or next week, and other interested schools could follow suit.
“He’s getting a lot of mail from a lot of different people,” Foley coach Todd Watson said. “A lot of recruiters now are a little more cautious with early offers. I think a lot of them want to see what he does in his junior year and go back and evaluate tape from there.”
Aside from a minor ankle injury he suffered early on, Bingham is putting together a strong junior season. The 6-foot-3, 200-pound wide receiver has caught a touchdown in nearly every game for Foley this year.
“I think I’ve been doing a lot better than I did last year, stats-wise anyway,” Bingham said. “My footwork is a lot better, and I’m a lot faster and stronger than I was last year.”
In addition to Mississippi State, the Alabama native says he’s hearing from Alabama, Auburn, Clemson, Kentucky, Louisville, LSU, Nebraska, Purdue, Vanderbilt and Wisconsin, among others.
Over the weekend, he visited Auburn for the Arkansas game.
“It was all right,” Bingham said. “It had nothing on Alabama.”
Bingham visited Tuscaloosa the week before when the Crimson Tide hosted Ole Miss. Still, he thinks the Tigers will turn it around in the next few years, and the AU coaching staff hopes he can be a part of that.
“They’re very young this year,” Bingham said. “I feel like the next two or three years, they’re going to be pretty good. Coach Trooper [Taylor] just pointed to the field and said, ‘See, that’s why we need you right there.’”
On his visit, he talked with 2014 ESPN Watch List linebacker Tre Williams.
Ultimately, if Bingham had his wish, he would like offers from Alabama and LSU. He believes the Tide might offer if he keeps putting up strong numbers this season. Foley also produced former UA wide receiver Julio Jones.
“I think there’s a strong possibility they offer me this year,” Bingham said. “It’s just I’m going to have to come out a little bit harder than I am.”
