For several months defensive back Jalen Battle (Davie, Fla./University School) has been verbally committed to Kentucky.
And while the 6-foot-2, 165-pound senior was not surprised to hear the news that the program will dismiss Joker Phillips at the end of the season, it could potentially change his commitment.
“It really wasn’t a surprise because people have been talking about it for weeks,” Battle explained. “I heard it on ESPN a whole lot, especially after every loss. I didn’t expect it to go down in the middle of the season, though.”
Like most of Kentucky’s commitments, Battle had nothing but nice things to say about Phillips.
“He's a great guy, I liked the way he carried himself,” Battle said. “Definitely the type of coach that you want to play for, he just wasn't getting the results. He was working hard and he was trying to bring in the right recruits to turn things around.”
Battle said that he’ll be in touch with several programs this week. He is still committed to Kentucky as of now and is eager to see which direction the program will go with its next hire.
“I’m definitely going to open up my recruiting process,” Battle added. “Ohio called me recently and I’m going to reach out to Illinois, Toledo, Navy and probably Buffalo because they’ve all kept in touch.
“I might take some officials, but I’ll probably wait to see who they hire before I make any drastic moves.”
