Drew Barker (Hebron, Ky./Conner) has seven offers and dozens of teams interested, so he’s heard the same pitch from coaches and seen several programs up close. A lot of them preach and show off tradition, but Barker said Notre Dame was on another level.
“Schools talks about tradition and that doesn’t mean much,” the Watch List quarterback said, “but when at Notre Dame I can actually feel it. That was really cool and very unique and no other school I’d been to had that effect on me.”
It was Barker’s first time at Notre Dame, which just began recruiting the junior signal-caller. He was not expecting an offer on the visit, just an opportunity to see the campus and atmosphere for himself. He talked with recruiting coordinator Tony Alford, and he let Barker know an offer could come sometime down the line.
“He told me I’m definitely at the top tier of quarterbacks on their 2014 board,” Barker said. “That’s great to hear. He told me I was bigger than expected and just watched my film I put out and said it was great and looked good and they’re going to keep staying in touch with me.”
The atmosphere blew Barker away on the visit even before the game even started.
“The fans are crazy. They take you on the walk and everyone’s screaming at you to go to Notre Dame,” he said. “… Coach [Brian] Kelly said there’s 75,000 fans out there. It was pretty awesome.”
Next weekend Barker will be back at Ohio State once again. He’s made several trips to Columbus and recently talked with the coaches.
“They were just at the school on the bye week. I think they’re gonna do something after the football season but not anything during,” Barker said about an offer to the 2014 quarterbacks the staff is evaluating. “That’s pretty much where they’re at right now.”
