Bielema reputation buoys 4-star QB Allen

Living in Fayetteville, Ark., four-star quarterback Austin Allen has heard just about every name imaginable as a potential candidate for the Arkansas head coaching position.

Former Wisconsin coach Bret Bielema was never one of them until Tuesday, when he was hired to be the next coach.

“I was kind of excited [about the news],” Allen said. “He’s a proven winner. I can’t wait to get to know Coach Bielema and see what he is going to bring to the offense.”

Allen is also a proven winner, helping guide Fayetteville to back-to-back Class 7A state championships. He said he is excited because he knows Bielema can get the job done as Wisconsin is headed to its third consecutive Rose Bowl.

Allen, who is 6-foot-1 and 202 pounds, has been committed to Arkansas since May and said he has never considered looking elsewhere.

With the hiring of Bielema, it only strengthens his bond with the Razorbacks.

“The name is shocking because, like I said, I hadn’t really heard about him,” Allen said. “But I know he’s a great coach. You don’t win the Big Ten three times in a row if you’re not.”

Allen said his No. 1 priority now is to get to know his new coach better and schedule his official visit to Arkansas.
