Offensive lineman Matt Cochran (Atwater, Calif./Buhach Colony) took his final official visit to Cal over the weekend and set an announcement date as well.
Cochran had previously visited Auburn, Washington and Tennessee and had a January visit set with Utah but will no longer take it. He actually came close to committing to the Tigers a little over a month ago.
“It was around early to mid-November,” Cochran said. “The day I was going to commit to Auburn, it pulled my offer. I knew that could happen, though, so there were no hard feelings. They told if I waited too long, someone else could grab that offer, but I wanted to take more visits. I trusted in God that whatever happened, it was his will so I never stressed over it.”
As for the visit to Cal, Cochran gave it high marks.
“The best part of the visit by far was hanging out with other recruits,” Cochran said.
"I’m sure everyone is saying that but it’s true. We all had a great time together and really bonded like a family. Plus for me, I already know a lot of the players on the team and enjoyed hanging out with those guys, too.
“Everyone was saying, ‘If you commit here, so will I,’ and things like that but it was mostly in fun. Still, I have a feeling a lot of those guys could end up at Cal, and they could be putting together a huge class. For me, I also loved the new performance center and of course the academics are second to none at Cal.”
Prior to the visit, Cochran said he was down to Cal and Tennessee and now knows where he wants to go.
“I have a good idea of what I want to do,” Cochran said. “I feel good about my decision, but I’m not ready to announce anything yet. I want to wait until the Marines Game in early January, and I’ll do it then. This was a fun process for me but I’m ready for it to be over and move on to the next chapter.”
