Russell down to two, sets decision date

Running back Keivarae Russell (Everett, Wash./Mariner) has narrowed his college choices to two and will make his decision next week.

Russell, the No. 5 player in the state and No. 25 back in the nation, took official visits to Notre Dame, Cal and Washington and also was offered scholarships by Arizona, Arizona State, Boise State, Colorado, Oregon State, Stanford, UCLA and USC among others.

“I’m down to Washington and Notre Dame,” Russell said. “Cal was cool too, and I had a good visit, but I like my opportunity to play early better at these two schools, and I have a better relationship with the coaching staffs at those two schools, as well.

“Notre Dame was a great visit, and despite the distance, the coaches have been recruiting me harder than anyone. I also like their scheme on offense and how they would use me. Washington is the hometown school, and they have a great coaching staff, as well. I really like Coach Sark [Steve Sarkisian], and I think they’re building something pretty special right here in my own backyard.”

Russell said he has made his decision and will announce at his high school gymnasium next Wednesday or Thursday.

“I know where I’m going, and I’m stoked about it,” Russell said. “I thought about waiting and announcing at the U.S Army All-American Bowl, but I want my friends, family and my community to be able to be there for it. It’s going to be fun, and even though we’re on Christmas break right now, I still think there will be enough people there to make it a good time.”
