Shaq Thompson (Sacramento, Calif./Grant) is a little over a week away from making his college choice but will take one more unofficial visit in January before completely closing the door on his recruitment.
Thompson, the No. 2 rated player in the state and the No. 3 ranked safety in the nation, committed last spring to Cal but re-opened his recruitment. He took official visits to Washington, Oregon, Notre Dame, Cal and Arizona State with the Bears holding a pretty solid lead throughout the process.
USC and UCLA also got involved late but it would be a surprise if Thompson grabs anything but a Cal hat at the U.S Army All-American Bowl January 7.
“I’m ready to get it done,” Thompson said. “I leave this Sunday and I’ll be announcing at the game. I’m not sure what I’m going to do in terms of how many hats and all that. I just know I’m ready to decide and excited to make my decision.”
Thompson said he plans to make one more unofficial visit before shutting things down until signing day.
“I’m going to visit UCLA,” Thompson said. “Before the dead period ended, I had a home visit with Jim Mora and really liked him. He didn’t make any promises and didn’t say anything about playing right away. All he said was I’ll have the chance to compete for playing time like everyone else on the team and I respected that.
“I also talked with Demetrice Martin, the new DB coach, who was recruiting me at Washington. We get along well and I like him a lot. I’m not sure on the exact date but I think it will be January 14. They’re having a big recruiting weekend that week so I’m pretty sure that’s when I’ll be going down there. That will likely be my last visit and then I’m shutting it down until Signing Day.”
