Kenny Lawler recaps Washington State

Upland, Calif., receiver Kenny Lawler visited Washington State over the weekend and could take one more trip this week or keep this one a two team race.

Lawler has been an Oregon State lean for the past few weeks but the Washington State visit definitely gave him a lot to think about.

“Kenny really liked it there,” Lawler’s father Kenny Sr. said. “He was hosted by their No. 1 receiver, Marquess Wilson and got along with him really well. He also spent some quality time with the quarterbacks and got a good feel for the kind of offense Coach [Mike] Leach will be running.

“If you’re a receiver, you know Washington State is going to be a good fit because the ball is going to be in the air a lot. He liked the campus a lot and got a tour of the Communications department as he wants to go in to broadcasting. I don’t know how excited he was about the snowstorm that went through there but there was snow on the ground when he visited Oregon State too so I guess he’s getting used to it.”

Lawler said he should know later in the week about a potential official visit to Cal.

“Jeff Tedford called last week,” Lawler said. “That was Kenny’s favorite school at one point but they filled up so fast and have seven receiver commitments. I don’t know if they want eight or not but he was supposed to call us Wednesday to see if they wanted us to visit this weekend.

“If they want us to, Kenny will. If not, he’ll decide between Oregon State and Washington State on signing day. Coach [Dennis] Simmons from Washington State was here on Monday and Coach [Brent] Brennan from Oregon State will be here Thursday. We like both coaches a lot and both have great staffs. It’s going to be a very tough decision.”
