Things have definitely picked up for quarterback Nate Sudfeld (Modesto Christian, Calif.) in recent weeks. The Arizona commit wasn’t sure how he would fit in with new Wildcats coach Rich Roidriguez, but Arizona remains a major player for the talented signal-caller.
Sudfeld, a four-star prospect ranked as the No. 14 quarterback in the country, had his concerns when news broke that Rodriguez would be the new Wildcat coach.
“I’m a pro-style quarterback and I originally thought Coach Rodriguez was a spread-option guy,” Sudfeld said. “That’s what he ran at Michigan and West Virginia so I assumed I would be going in a different direction and didn’t really think he would see me as an option for the offense he wanted to run.
“Then I got a chance to talk with him and we had a great conversation. He told me he runs an offense that is tailored to his quarterbacks’ strengths and he told me he really wants me. He said he’s going to recruit me hard and try to keep me committed. That was encouraging and I’m still very interested in Arizona right now, although I do want to keep my options open and look at what other possibilities are out there.”
Sudfeld said he didn’t just take what Rodriguez said as gospel truth but has done his own research to see if he ever has had a drop-back quarterback.
“I’m definitely doing my homework,” Sudfeld said. “When he was at Tulane, he coached Shaun King, who was a pro-style guy and also had some drop-back quarterbacks at Clemson. Coach Rodriguez said he wants to come by the house next week for a visit and I also plan to take an official visit there as well.”
Sudfeld has seen his recruitment take off in recent weeks and he’s hoping to set up a few official visits shortly.
“Things have really picked up for me,” Sudfeld said. “Arkansas and USC came to watch me throw at school Tuesday. I throw to my receivers after school almost every day so they got to see me go through a complete workout. I was also able to talk to them afterwards and they told me they’re interested.
“I’m also talking with UCLA, Ole Miss, Stanford, Notre Dame, Vandy, Tennessee, Nevada, Fresno State, Tulsa and a few more. I have offers from UA, Fresno State and New Mexico State and I fully anticipate picking up a few more offers very soon. I want to take all five of my visits and I’m working on setting those up very soon here.”
