Two team race for Kenny Lawler

Wide out Kenny Lawler (Upland, Calif.) took an official visit to Oregon State over the weekend and the Beavers sound like they could be tough to beat.

Lawler still has several schools on his list but it sounds like this could come down to a pair of Pac 12 schools.

“Kenny really liked it at Oregon State,” Lawler’s father, Kenny Sr., said. “He camped there in the summer so he’s familiar with the coaches and the campus. They have a great young quarterback that is going to throw for a lot of yards and the depth chart is pretty open, so Kenny likes his chances to play early.

“Coach [Mike] Riley came over for a visit last night and that went really well. Everyone knows what a great guy Riley is. He’s very low key, doesn’t try and pressure you and it’s easy to sit back and just relax with him so it went well.”

Lawler will check out Washington State this weekend and that could be his final visit. One thing to watch for is who Cal hires as their new receiver coach and the Bears could potentially be a player in this one.

“Mike Leach is coming over tonight,” Lawler said. “This will be the first time we’ve talked with him, so it should be fun. I’ve heard great things about him and Kenny is looking forward to his visit. He’s an offensive minded coach with a pass happy offense so what receiver wouldn’t be interested in that.

“I’m hearing Charlie Collins could get the receiver job at Cal and if he does, Kenny would be very interested. Cal was his top choice for a while but they filled up on receivers. Charlie worked with Kenny when he was little, and he’s a great coach. He would be a great hire and if that happens, I know Kenny would have a strong interest in going there.”
