Recruiting is starting to heat up for junior college inside linebacker Auston Johnson (Torrance, Calif./El Camino Community College). And while things might have fallen through on an official visit to Ohio State, they’re heating up elsewhere.
With offers from Texas A&M, Portland State and UTEP coming in, a new suitor is beginning a push for the 6-foot-1, 230-pound inside linebacker, as BYU is showing heavy interest.
In turn, Johnson is showing interest right back.
“I feel like it’s a place where I can get a good education,” Johnson said. “It’s a good place where I can play football and be closer to God.
“The scheme that they run defensive-wise is a 3-4. They like to blitz and that scheme fits me a lot. Whoever gets me gets a leader, athlete and someone that can be a playmaker.”
Those numbers are hard to refute as Johnson is coming off a 10-game season where he made 97 tackles -- 13½ for loss -- recorded 6½ sacks, and had 1 forced fumble and 1 fumble recovery.
Arizona, Kentucky, Memphis, Minnesota and Oregon are showing Johnson interest as well.
