After being fired by the Chicago Bears, Lovie Smith interviewed with the Buffalo Bills, San Diego Chargers and Philadelphia Eagles. As of this afternoon's hiring of Chip Kelly by the Eagles, all of those positions have been filled, and he's not a candidate for the remaining coaching vacancies with the Arizona Cardinals and Jacksonville Jaguars. Per Sean Jensen of the Chicago Sun-Times, Smith is expected to take the 2013 season off.
"Smith is expected to sit out the 2013 NFL season and reconsider his options next offseason, according to a league source," Jensen wrote.
While there has been some thought given to the idea of Smith working as a defensive coordinator, it appears he will step away from the game for the first time since began coaching high school football in 1980. On the upside, Jensen reports that Smith will earn $5 million in 2013 from the Bears for the final year of his contract.
