Replacing Welker

Predictably, we haven't heard any real leaks from the New England Patriots about what they plan to do with Wes Welker this offseason. He played this past season under the franchise tag, which paid him about $9.5 million. In order for the Pats to tag him again, they'd have to pay him $11.4 million in 2013. And while tagging him to buy them more time to work out an extension is a possibility, they certainly don't want to be on the hook for that chunk of change if they can't come to terms.

Should they not tag Welker or sign him to an extension, ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter thinks there is a legitimate case to be made for replacing Welker with Danny Amendola, if the St. Louis Rams fail to tag or re-sign him:

"It's definitely possible. ... Amendola is a poor man's, younger, cheaper Welker. If New England can't re-sign Welker, it would not be surprising in the least if the Patriots made a run at Amendola."
