This isn’t how it was supposed to work out for the Quebec native and the club he idolized growing up.

But there’s no denying that the relationship between Daniel Briere and the Montreal Canadiens has grown cold. In fact, after the two-year, $8 million deal was signed in the summer, the honeymoon ended almost as soon as the veteran forward took to the ice for Les Habitants.

After an uninspiring start to the regular season, there was the concussion that sidelined Briere through the end of October and the first half of November. Then there was the 10-game pointless stretch in December, followed by a two-game stint as a healthy scratch. Then, after scoring two goals and notching an assist in his triumphant return from the press box, a series of goose eggs on the score sheets for another four straight contests. Even though Briere has been more effective for the Canadiens since the launch of the new year, there’s no guarantee he remains in coach Michel Therrien’s good books for long.

At any rate, there’s certainly enough evidence to justify the latest round of Briere-related trade rumblings.
